The gap we kept hearing
"I understand it. I'm just not comfortable speaking it."

For the past few years, we have promoted Haitian Kreyòl across social media and grown a real community of heritage learners and culture lovers.

The same sentence kept coming back to us. People understand Kreyòl, then freeze when it is time to speak. That gap is not about vocabulary. It closes when you speak out loud, often, with someone beside you who can guide your ear and your voice.

That is the whole purpose of this cohort.

And you do not have to speak perfectly to belong here. This cohort is for people who understand more than they can say. You will not be shamed, rushed, or corrected harshly. You will be guided, encouraged, and invited to use your voice little by little.

Lizay, mwen rele Amoni!

Is this you?

Built for heritage learners, not total beginners.

This cohort is for you if

  • You understand Kreyòl at home, in church, or with family, but hesitate when it is your turn to answer.
  • You are Haitian or Haitian-descended and want to speak with confidence, not just recognize words.
  • You want a patient, live space to practice out loud with people who get it.

This is not for you if

  • You are starting from zero and need a full beginner alphabet course.
  • You want a self-paced app you work through alone.
  • You are looking for professional interpreter certification.

Why learn with us

Professional training and lived cultural knowledge.

Many people can speak Haitian Kreyòl. Fewer have spent decades translating it, interpreting it, writing it, teaching it, and thinking carefully about how adults learn to speak it with confidence.

More than 20 years in Kreyòl

Marleen has worked professionally in Haitian Kreyòl for over two decades as a translator, interpreter, author, and teacher.

A real method, not improvised

The cohort is built on two decades of practice and on what research shows about how adults move from understanding a language to speaking it.

01

Through story

We learn inside the fables of Nan Jaden Amoni. Grammar and words arrive through the story, the way Haitian wisdom has always been passed down.

02

Through konbit

Konbit is the Haitian way of working as one. You learn in a small circle, out loud, carried by others doing the same beside you.

03

Live, every week

Each session, you speak. Real time, real voice, patient correction. Speaking is the skill you want, so speaking is what we practice.

How you'll learn

The Amoni Method.

Five steps, repeated with every fable. You move from watching to creating, one story at a time. Around them, each lesson adds vocabulary, a comprehension check, and a moment to reflect.

STEP 1

Gade

Look

Settle into the illustration and the scene before a single word.

STEP 2

Koute

Listen

Hear the fable read aloud in Haitian Kreyòl to tune the ear.

STEP 3

Li

Read

Read it yourself, matching sound to text.

STEP 4

Pale

Speak

Say it out loud, from single words to the closing proverb.

STEP 5

Kreye

Create

Make it your own: retell it, write it, perform it.

Inside one live session

One hour, live, and most of it is you speaking.

The hour is built around your voice: about 45 of the 60 minutes is you speaking. Over eight weeks, that's roughly 8 hours of live speaking with feedback, plus your weekly 15-minute one-on-one.

First minutes · Warm welcome, greetings in Kreyòl, no cold calls.
Quick recall · A quick recap of the story in your own words, to warm up your voice.
Pale, the heart · Guided speaking: repeat, transform, answer, converse, with patient correction. Everyone speaks.
Kreye · Share your own sentences out loud and build new ones together as a group.
Proverb & culture · Close with the proverb and a real conversation about what it means. Take one small voice-note challenge home for the week.
Woven through every session

You leave with more than words.

Speaking is the focus, but every story teaches more. Each lesson opens into vocabulary, culture, and the writing system: the pillars of Kreyòl, woven through every fable.

Vocabulary · Jaden Vokabilè

Each story builds your words: the key vocabulary and expressions from the fable, said aloud with audio, so you know them by sound and by spelling.

Culture · Kafou Konesans

Every fable carries a proverb and a cultural note: the Haitian wisdom, traditions, and history behind the story, so you learn the culture, not just the language.

Writing system · Atelye Òtograf

A clear guide to how Kreyòl is written: one letter, one sound, following the official standard of the Akademi Kreyòl Ayisyen, so you can finally read and write the language you already speak.

More than the sessions

What being a founding member gets you.

The live cohort is the heart of it. Around it, you get a community and support that keep you speaking all week, not only in class.

Real life, in Kreyòl

The fables give you the words and the confidence; the weekly conversations are where you spend them. Simple, everyday exchanges in your private cohort group about real life, family, culture, and what is happening in Haiti and the diaspora, so your Kreyòl feels useful beyond the story.

Your private cohort group

A private Telegram group just for your cohort, with your classmates and Marleen in it, separate from our open community. Practice and stay connected all week.

One-on-one with Marleen

Beyond the group, you get a 15-minute one-on-one check-in with Marleen each week, in scheduled office-hour windows: private time to work on your own voice, your questions, and the pronunciation you want to master. Coaching made for you, not just the room.

After eight weeks

What you'll be able to do.

By the end of the eight weeks, working through the fables with the Amoni Method, here is what you'll be able to do in Kreyòl, out loud and on the page.

1
Read Haitian Creole in its standard spelling, matching the sounds you already know.
2
Understand and retell the fables of Nan Jaden Amoni in your own words.
3
Introduce yourself and answer everyday questions in Kreyòl without freezing.
4
Write your own words and sentences in correct Kreyòl spelling.
5
Speak with less fear, and more of your own voice.

This is the floor, not the ceiling. These are what every committed member can do by the end. Motivated learners go well beyond, into real conversation, sharing opinions, and telling longer stories.
